This blog is a parenting and lifestyle blog and so I write about brands I love for mums and kids and mama topics and interiors and so on, but then it hit me that to parent, includes the man in your life and I have been completely ignoring them! I am so sorry! So for my first of many dedicated men posts, here’s a gorgeous one which will benefit us mama’s too as our hunks will look super fab on the beach this summer…
And with that note, let me introduce you to the most exquisite Italian swimwear brand exclusively for men: RIPA & RIPA (visit them on www.riparipa.com)
I asked Anna and Oliviero, both founders of Ripa & Ripa, some questions to find out more about the brand:
How was Ripa & Ripa born?
Oliviero: I was looking for a new pair of swim shorts in Milan and decided to spend an afternoon going through stores. All of the shorts I found felt too synthetic, were covered in either sharks or penguins and made me feel like I was wearing a parachute.
Neither Anna nor I knew much about swimwear at the time, but I had a good idea of how I wanted them to look, so we took a car – Anna’s old Fiat Panda – and drove around Italy’s textile districts looking for someone who could make them for us. A few months later, we had boxes with over 500 shorts in them stacked at Anna’s flat in Navigli.
What’s yours and Oliviero’s background work-wise?
Anna: We did our Bachelor together in Economics at Bocconi in Milan, the idea came up in the last year of our bachelor. I absolved two internships in men’s luxury fashion houses (Berluti and Ermenegildo Zegna), whereas Oliviero has worked in accelerators and venture capital firms.I then went on and did my masters in Marketing at ESADE in Barcelona and since then have been working full time on Ripa & Ripa.
Are you together? If so, what are the benefits and difficulties of working together?
Anna: No, no we are not, we are very good friends who met in our first year of university and shared the same values and ideas of creating elegant men’s swim shorts.
Where do you get your print inspiration from?
Anna: We get our inspiration all throughout the year on travels we do, mostly we get inspired in the South of Italy – Sicily, the Costiera Amalfitana, where tiles and colours are everywhere!
Is there a distinct design feature on your swimming trunks?
Anna: yes, the hidden detail that no one notices! The edges of the pockets are lined with a thin rope piping. This detail was added by our producer, who tailors bespoke suits and wanted to add a sartorial touch to the swim shorts. It makes the pocket more complicated to build and hardly anyone notices it, but now it’s part of the product’s story.
What’s been your best seller?
Anna: Our best sellers are Panarea and Pantelleria they have been sold out 4 times even after 2 reorders within the season (also this season again!).
What country do you sell the most to?
Anna: I’d say we are very European, our retailers are in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and the UK, whereas with our e-commerce we can reach everyone.
